Spacing lets you add gaps between items in your grid. This is essential for fitting belts, walkways, or power poles between production buildings.

What is Spacing?

By default, scaled items are placed edge-to-edge. Spacing adds a configurable gap:

  • 0 spacing — Items touch (default)
  • Positive spacing — Gap between items
  • Negative spacing — Items overlap (advanced use)

Controls

Action Default Key Description
Activate Spacing ; (hold) Enable spacing mode
Increase Spacing Scroll Up or NumPad 8 (while holding ;) Add gap
Decrease Spacing Scroll Down or NumPad 5 (while holding ;) Reduce gap
Cycle Axis NumPad 0 (while holding ;) Switch X → Y → Z

Per-Axis Spacing

Unlike original Smart!, the rebuild supports independent spacing per axis:

  • X Spacing — Gap between columns
  • Y Spacing — Gap between rows
  • Z Spacing — Gap between layers

Use NumPad 0 while holding ; to cycle through axes.

Step-by-Step Example

Adding Belt Gaps Between Constructors

  1. Select a Constructor hologram
  2. Scale to 4×1 (NumPad 8 three times)
  3. Hold ; to enter spacing mode
  4. Scroll up to add 2m X spacing
  5. Release ; and place

Now you have 4 Constructors with 2-meter gaps — perfect for belt routing!

Common Spacing Values

Use Case Suggested Spacing
Belt between buildings 2m - 4m
Walkway access 4m - 8m
Power pole placement 2m
Aesthetic gaps 1m - 2m

Tips

  1. Check the HUD — Spacing values display in real-time
  2. Use Smart! Panel — Type exact values for precision
  3. Combine with Steps — Spacing + Steps = ramped rows with gaps
  4. Test first — Place a small grid to verify spacing before scaling up
